How blocks, slash commands, and outlines keep a novel or research binder structured — so you can navigate, revise, and export without flattening the manuscript.
Blocks let Inkwell diff at the paragraph and section level, run skills on structured nodes, and export to markdown without losing hierarchy. A page-only editor flattens structure into one scrolling field — fine for short notes, brittle for a novel or research binder you revise for months.
Canvas is early access — blocks and history are here; every embed type is not. Use it for manuscripts and research now; don’t expect a full Notion widget catalog on day one.
Headings and nested blocks feed an outline view — drag to reorder chapters, collapse research, and keep the manuscript navigable at novel length. The outline is a view over the same structured document, not a separate corkboard file that drifts from the prose.
Yes — Canvas sits on the same platform primitives as Plot. Name a save point before a structural rewrite, branch a draft line for an alternate chapter order, then incorporate the winning sections with block-aware changes instead of pasting between duplicate files.
Collaboration and real-time presence follow the platform cadence; during early access, prefer named save points before risky edits so you always have a restore point.
Skills that understand structure can target headings, sections, or selected blocks — propose a research digest, tighten a methods section, or reorganize an outline — then land as reviewable edits inside the document. That only works when the doc is typed blocks, not a single opaque blob.
Canvas is in early access / beta — join the waitlist on the Canvas product page. Plot is generally available for screenplays today.
Plot is the intended home for series bibles (and treatments that stay screenplay-native). Canvas is for general-purpose documents — novels, research binders, team wikis — the Notion/Docs shape. Keep research notes in Canvas if you want; keep the room’s bible in Plot next to the episodes.
Plot embeds are a Canvas launch priority so a bible or research doc can reference real script pages. Early access may show limited embed fidelity — check the changelog as embeds mature.
